Reader’s Question:

I’m looking at a 10-year old Corolla to give to my kid for his practice driving. A neighbor just wants to get the car off his hands. You know, before the big leagues. I hate to give my son a brand-new car to drive and bump around Texas. Any “ins” and “outs” on this model?

Jay

Houston, TX

Whoa! Jay, Jay, Jay. A 10-year old car, eh? A wise choice for the wallet, but you gotta ask yourself, “Are you really serious?” But hey, since you want the ins and outs, we’ll give you some. I won’t blame you if you do decide to go with this car. It’ll be cheap experience as a learner’s car in Houston.

I think these will be more of general tips. The Corolla back in ’98 had a reliable 16-valve engine on it. If your neighbor properly maintained the car, it should not give you a lot of headaches. One good thing I can point out, though, even if this car is already “aged,” accessories won’t be difficult to find and I think parts are still easy to come by. After all, it is a Toyota. There are critical points you should look for, though. If you see it parked at your neighbor’s car port, do check if the car still “stands” right. Signs of suspension abuse or faults can also be spotted that way. If it leans to a side too much, could be a coil spring or a shock problem. Look under the car, too, check for oil leaks. I am sure your neighbor will allow you to test drive it, do so. After starting, check out if the car is not blowing white smoke already, that’s engine wear (oil and water leak). And also check if the safety gear still work. Good thing with buying used cars off private individuals, I am sure you can get it dirt cheap. What are neighbors for, anyway?

If you get the cash in the future, you can try certified pre-owned cars in dealers in Texas.

Reader’s Question:

What are the benefits of buying used approved pre owned cars?

Fred

Since car manufacturers and dealers have to maintain high level of quality, their vehicles should be free of mechanical defects and problems. They should also be the source for excellent source for well looked after vehicles.
Buying from a dealer in this day and age means that you are covered with the acceptable standard of quality. Reputable dealers should be members of a trade organization that follows proper business conducts and sale of goods act. In this case, you are protected by the law.

Also, since competition is really high in terms of car dealership, you have high chance of getting competitive finance options. Not only that, oftentimes, your vehicle may come with a free warranty, insurance and service.

Reader’s Question:

What would be the best advice that you could give in purchasing a vehicle?

Kyle

Houston, TX

Before you start looking for a new or pre owned car, you have to make sure that it would meet your daily needs. You also have to consider a few things so that you don’t end up losing much money especially in maintaining and keeping the vehicle. It may seem pretty obvious to ask yourself if such car is right for you. But it is very easy to get side tracked while hunting for a new car and might end up with an expensive yet unpractical one.

You have to give priority to the things that you really need from buying a new vehicle. Would it suit your lifestyle? Are you looking for a vehicle that would fit your family? Or a new flash car to impress your friends and family? I don’t see the logic in buying a Coupe or a sedan if you have a family of 5, or buy and large Volvo estate if you’re single.

It would be really helpful if you prepare a checklist before you buy a new or used car. Having a Vehicle Data Check is very important as you need to know if the car you are planning to buy has any outstanding financial obligation or has been a total write off in past. Worst case is that the car you are eyeing to buy might not come directly from the manufacturer. Also, you should consider checking the mechanical component of the car. You don’t want to end up losing money like water for repairs especially for pre owned cars.

Check all local dealers in your area. They may have competitive and quality used cheap cars. Get a local survey for the prices and models of the type of vehicle you are planning to buy. You may check different website on the Internet to see what these car dealers are offering. You may want to check local dealers that also specialized on the brand of car. There are several car dealers in Houston Texas that offers cheap used cars. Remember, the more options you have, gives you great chances of having the car that you want as if it was custom built for you. And don’t forget, even if it is a pre owned car, you ought to have an insurance with it.

A great used car dealer in Houston is Beck and Masten. They sell both new and used cars, and most of the used cars that they offer car certified pre owned cars. However, the only certified pre owned cars that you can trust from a used car dealer in Houston are pretty much just Mercedes and Lexus, so if the car you want isn’t of those, you should get a vehicle title check anyway.

This used car dealer in Houston has a lot of internet specials. One of them applies to any car you buy, which is that if you buy a pr owned car from this used car dealer in Houston, you get a five hundred dollar Wal Mart gift card. Many of the pre owned cars are also, keeping with the Wal Mart spirit, marked own, including the 2004 GMC Envoy, for only $15,000, and the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe, for only $26,000.
